screen time tips
how to choose calmer kids content
a simple checklist for evaluating kids' content: what to look for, what to avoid, and how to find shows that respect your toddler's brain.
the 60-second content check
before you hit play, watch the first 2 minutes and ask yourself:
โ visual check
- are scenes changing every 1-3 seconds? (red flag)
- are colors neon or extremely bright? (red flag)
- is there a lot happening on screen at once? (red flag)
โ audio check
- is there constant noise or layered sounds? (red flag)
- are sound effects loud or jarring? (red flag)
- is the music frantic or chaotic? (red flag)
โ pacing check
- does it feel rushed? (red flag)
- is there any quiet moment? (if not, red flag)
- would YOU feel overwhelmed watching this? (trust your gut)
green flags to look for
- scenes last 5+ seconds โ gives kids time to process
- softer color palette โ pastels, muted tones, natural colors
- clear, melodic music โ songs you'd actually want to hear again
- simple stories โ one concept at a time
- natural pacing โ not trying to cram 10 ideas into 5 minutes
the real-world test
the best test? watch what happens after:
overstimulating content
- zoned out during
- cranky after
- demands more
- hard transitions
calm content
- engaged during
- regulated after
- accepts "all done"
- easy transitions
need a shortcut?
if you don't want to evaluate every show yourself, start with content that's already designed to be low stimulus. that's exactly what we make at boboring.club.
